Returning for their 4th year, Kids in the Rotunda welcomes back The Black Star Drum Line. Founded in 2008 by director Joey B. Banks, Black Star Drum Line gives kids in the Madison community an opportunity for creative expression through percussive arts. Banks incorporates diversity, respect for self and others, unity and mastery as the core elements of the youth development model he created as a youth professional in the Madison area for over 20 years.
The group has performed at over 600 events in Wisconsin and Madison, collaborating with many local artists, including: WYSO Percussion Ensemble, The Handphibians, Rob Dz, A.N.T. the Hop Boy, Keon Andre, Trilogy, Jeff Weiss, Gabe Burdulis, Anthony Lamarr, and Bradley Thomas(DLO). Highlights include playing for 25,000 people at “Lifest” in 2012, opening for Rapper B.O.B. at UW-Whitewater in 2014, and opening for the national touring act “Drum Line” at Overture Hall in 2017. The group became the first junior drumline in the NBA as the Milwaukee Bucks “Mini Beats”, performing at 7 home games during the 2016/17 season.
The Kids in the Rotunda performance gives the audience a chance to interact with the kids and performers on stage and even play some drums. Make sure to catch a performance, you will be impressed by the talent and skill of these young performing artists.
