A concert of contemporaries features three composers from the mid twentieth century. Former Madisonian violist, Vicki Powell, performs the Suite for Viola and Chamber Orchestra by Vaughan Williams, with eight short movements covering a variety of dance styles, putting both soloist and orchestra through their paces. Benjamin Britten honors his teacher with his early string work, Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge. Keeping things on British soil, the romantic and soulful Benedictus by Sir Alexander Mackenzie, Elgar’s teacher, sets the stage for Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring. A fitting conclusion and celebration of life.
