2017 Jimmy Awards Opening Number
Including snippets from songs featured in current Broadway shows, the 74 participants of the National High School Musical Theater Awards make their Broadway debut in the Minskoff Theater in NYC. Tommy representative Max Pink shines in his solo moment in the song.
Overture is a participant in the National High School Musical Theater Awards (NHSMTA) program. Outstanding Lead Performer recipients are eligible to audition to be one of two participants, one actor & one actress, sent to New York City for nationals. The week-long experience includes rehearsals, master classes, private coaching and interviews with theater professionals leading up to the live awards show where the Jimmy™ Award for Best Performance by an Actor and Best Performance by an Actress are presented.
The National High School Musical Theatre Awards™ (the Jimmy® Awards) are a national celebration of outstanding student achievement, recognizing individual artistry in vocal, dance, and acting performance and elevating the importance of theatre arts education in schools. The Jimmy Awards are presented by The Broadway League Foundation.

Students are eligible to audition if they:
- Receive an Outstanding Lead Performer Award in the 2017-18 season.
- Are available to go to New York City for the NHSMT Awards week.
- Are able to complete the additional NHSMTA requirements (posted in May 2018).
There is no financial obligation for the students who are chosen to travel to nationals. All travel, accommodation, and food costs will be paid for by NHSMTA and Overture Center.
Interested students MUST REGISTER in advance. Audition registration will be available in May 2018. Additional requirements for the audition are noted on the audition registration form.
This is a two-part audition:
Part 1: Students should prepare ONE (1) full song in the style of musical theater (ballad or up-tempo) AND a 32-bar cut from their performance this year. An accompanist will be provided.
Part 2: Some students will be requested to stay for a call back. Students are asked to prepare TWO (2) full songs in the style of musical theater (ballad or up-tempo) for the call back.
Once the audition is complete the reviewer panel will convene to choose the two representatives. The two representatives will be notified by phone no later than the Monday after the audition. All others will be notified by email.
