Summer Gallery Shows Feature Farms, Food and Nature
Opening Reception Scheduled for July 11
Overture Galleries continue Overture Center’s commitment to fostering outstanding local visualarts and open a new Summer Cycle. Located in Overture Center for the Arts, 201 State Street, Madison, Wisconsin, the Overture Galleries radiate off the Rotunda lobby on three levels.
The following shows will be featured from June 30 – September 7, 2014:
S.V. Medaris & Alicia Rheal, From Farm to Fork, Gallery I
S.V. Medaris and Alicia Rheal have been raising animals for food and as models for their artwork for over a decade, exploring the relationship humans have with the animals raised for consumption as well as those cared for in companionship. By using wooden cut-outs of life-size livestock, and traditional paintings and prints mounted to block-printed fabric wallpaper–all elements depicting the different seasons on the farm–the imagery leads the viewers sequentially from spring to summer to the fall harvest as visitors walk the length of the gallery.
Richard Ely and Stephen Enriquez, Plain Nature, Playful Nature, Gallery II
Richard Ely and Stephen Enriquez create works that suggest the aliveness and beauty of the natural world in surprising and mysterious ways. Richard creates colorful, whimsically altered landscapes out of torn tissue paper, while Stephen paints landscapes with oils that attempt to distill his experience of nature and its unity.
The Printed World: Artists as Visual Ecologists, Curated by Anders Zanichkowsky, Gallery III
Printmaking has been used throughout history to illustrate scientific knowledge, and by artists at the margins of society to empower their ideas. This show will feature printmakers who create and populate environments, both real and imagined, that offer us new narratives about nature and power.
Overture will be hosting a reception for all three Summer Cycle exhibitions Friday, July 11th from 6 to 8 p.m. Refreshments will be served in the Promenade Lounge.
Overture Galleries are free and open to the public.
Gallery I is sponsored by 77 Square; Gallery II is sponsored by Madison Investment Advisors; Gallery III is sponsored by Webcrafters-Frautschi Foundation.
