Hundreds of thousands of people are going to see it and use it, and we don’t have to worry about wear and tear issues.

Next time you visit Overture Center, check out our new carpeting!

Thank you to the installation team at Coyle Carpet One Floor & Home, a 2023/24 Overture community partner, and carpet manufacturer Interface, Inc., for their help in giving Overture a fresh look to top off its classy style.

“The new carpeting looks great,” said Tom Coyle, owner of Coyle Carpet One Floor & Home, who visited Overture Center for an event two days after the completion of the flooring project’s first phase.

Overture’s original carpeting from 2004 was replaced on the first floor in Gallery I, on the second and third floors outside of Overture Hall, through Promenade Terrace and Promenade Lounge, and in Galleries II and III. Tile was added in front of the concession areas, which history has proven to be high-spill areas.

Darren Pavlik, president of Coyle Contract, the division of Coyle Carpet One Floor & Home overseeing the work at Overture, explained that Overture’s carpeting had been cleaned so many times over the past 19 years that the fibers had broken down and stains could not be removed.

Our guests were noticing the state of our carpeting and commenting about its condition in post-show survey comments. We understood, and all of us at Overture eagerly awaited the carpet replacement project, which began with the bidding process earlier this year, with Coyle Carpet One Floor & Home ultimately winning the bid.

Coyle Carpet One Floor & Home, originated in 1945 by Tom Coyle’s grandfather, has evolved over the decades, transitioning from a hardware store to carpeting and flooring enterprise with several divisions, serving residential and commercial customers on flooring projects of all sizes.

Overture’s first phase of the project included new flooring for 15,000 square feet of space. The original carpeting was a 12-foot-wide, broadloom material, which comes in a big roll. The new flooring is comprised of 10-inch by three-feet carpet tiles.

“Tiles can be switched out if a stain can’t be removed,” said Pavlik. “Plus, there is less waste during installation because pieces are smaller, so there is less cutting and throwing away of sections than from a 12-foot-roll.”

Coyle Carpet One Floor & Home partnered with Interface, Inc., which is driven by sustainable business practices and is the first global flooring manufacturer to sell all products as carbon neutral across their full life cycle, to draw up design options. This process was done electronically to narrow the choices down to two, and then samples were ordered and brought to Overture for evaluation.

“Interface carpeting has a long life, possibly up to 20 years, if maintained correctly,” said Pavlik.

The project’s third-floor portion, which took five days, was completed in April. The second floor, along with Gallery 1, was scheduled to begin after “Disney’s The Lion King” in May. This portion took 10 days and was completed on June 9. It included upgraded padding in the Promenade Lounge to help absorb sound, making it less noisy when full of people.

Coyle and Pavlik are proud to complete this project for Overture Center.

“The arts are vital to a thriving community, which makes Overture vital to Madison,” said Coyle. “Overture does a fabulous job offering artists a place to perform and exhibit their art as well as giving our community a beautiful space to experience the arts.”

Coyle will be back at Overture in August for Broadway’s “SIX” in Overture Hall. He enjoys showing off the company’s workmanship to his family. Pavlik agrees.

“I’ll be bringing my kids to see ‘Bluey’s Big Play’ in August,” he said. “I love telling them ‘Daddy helped install this carpeting’ when we visit past project sites.”

According to Coyle, in his 20 years with the company, this is one of the projects he is most proud of in Madison.

“Hundreds of thousands of people are going to see it and use it, and we don’t have to worry about wear and tear issues,” he said.

Overture plans to do two more phases of flooring updates, which will continue later this year.
