Madison Ballet: Celebrating 20 years at Overture
August 27, 2024

Madison Ballet celebrates its 20th year as a resident company at Overture this September. Since its founding in 1981, Madison Ballet has influenced Madison’s arts community and impacted many lives through its dedication to accessibility, education and artistic excellence.
The organization is committed to bringing world-class ballet to Madison by training the next generation of dancers and inspiring audiences of all ages through dynamic performances and comprehensive education at the School of Madison Ballet. Through extensive outreach efforts and partnerships with community groups, Madison Ballet creates opportunities for everyone to experience the power of dance, both on and off the stage.
Madison Ballet’s commitment to making ballet accessible to all is further reinforced through its educational and outreach programs. Free and low-cost initiatives are offered to ensure everyone can experience the art form.
"We have a school where anyone—from children to elders—can take classes," Artistic Director Ja' Malik explained. "Ballet doesn’t have to be about becoming a professional dancer; it’s a great way to stay in shape and connect with others."

Ja' Malik fully embraces this mission. His love for ballet began around the age of 10, when he attended his first performance. The storytelling, costumes and movement left a lasting impression on him, but he didn’t initially see ballet as a possible career because he didn’t see anyone on stage who looked like him.
"I hadn’t seen anything like it before, but there were no dancers on stage that looked like me," Ja' Malik recalled. That changed a few years later when he saw a Cleveland Ballet performance, where the lead performer resembled him. "Seeing someone who finally looked like me on stage made me realize that I could pursue ballet."
Ja' Malik has since drawn inspiration from his favorite leaders of the dance world and channels that inspiration into his work at Madison Ballet.
"The momentum Madison Ballet is building with extraordinary artists, dynamic programming, brilliant new creations, exciting collaborations and time-honored traditions is truly exciting," said Ja’ Malik.
Additionally, Ja’ Malik’s dedication to the dancers of the company is unwavering.
"They work incredibly hard and with such passion," he said. "That’s why I’m here in Madison—to help push Madison Ballet forward and ensure it thrives."
As a resident company, Madison Ballet is proud to call Overture home.
"Overture Center is a magical place that brings communities together," said Ja' Malik. "It offers an unparalleled opportunity to meet and connect with people who share a love for the performing arts. The excitement and support for every artist performing at Overture make it a truly special venue."
In 2024, when Madison Ballet returned to Capitol Theater with its “Timeless” program, the audience's overwhelming support and enthusiasm culminated in a thunderous standing ovation. "It was an unforgettable experience that reaffirmed our commitment to excellence," Ja' Malik said.
This season, Madison Ballet features two dynamic mixed repertory programs: the beloved holiday tradition of “The Nutcracker,” December 13-22, and the return of a Madison favorite, “A Midsummer Night's Dream,” April 4-6, both set in the historic Capitol Theater. They’ll also perform "Rhapsody in Blue," which celebrates the 100th anniversary of George Gershwin’s iconic piece, September 27-29, and “Mozart + More,” February 14-23, at the Starlight Theater at MYArts.
In addition to these exciting performances, Madison Ballet will collaborate with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra for their “Masterworks III” program on February 28 in Overture’s Capitol Theater.
Madison Ballet’s 20th year with Overture is not just a milestone for the company but for the entire community that has supported it. With Ja' Malik’s artistic direction, along with the talent of incredible artists, creative programming and deep community connections, the future of Madison Ballet is as vibrant and inspiring as the performances they bring to life.
