Drumline Live brings important historical context about HBCU's
Drumline Live’s one-night-only appearance at Overture Center for the Arts was an exhilarating showcase of extraordinary musicality, vibrant cultural exchange and boundless energy! Drumline Live is rooted in the rich cultural traditions of U.S. Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Marching Bands.
On Friday, Jan. 5, we welcomed groups from UW-Madison’s South Madison Partnership, Root 2 Rise, Climb USA and the Madison Metropolitan (WI) Chapter of The Links, Inc. to the performance.
Before the electrifying performance, we savored the flavors of Southern comfort cuisine courtesy of Melly Mel’s catering during a reception where guests of Madison’s Links had the unique opportunity to engage with the talented cast of Drumline Live, many of whom were current or former students and alumni of HBCUs. This gathering also provided a platform for current and former Madison-area college students to share insights into the significance of HBCUs. They passionately discussed the vital role of community in higher education environments, shedding light on how it profoundly influenced both their academic journeys and performances.

Janeane Leese, operations manager at Climb USA, shared, “Thank you so much for the wonderful experience at the Drumline Live performance on Friday. My group, the CLIMB Youth Leaders, had an amazing time and were so appreciative of the opportunity to see the show. They couldn't stop talking about how cool the show was and how much fun they were having. I received texts afterward saying things like ‘We had a great time tonight’ and ‘I appreciate the opportunity to see such a wonderful and empowering show! Thank you!’ The seats we were given were also spectacular.”
The performance was filled with lively audience interactions as the dynamic members of Drumline Live not only took center stage but also ventured into the aisles. Post-show, they guided the audience to Overture Hall lobby for a captivating extended performance. The joyful music reverberated throughout the stunning space, creating an immersive experience for all. Attendees relished the opportunity to personally connect with the performers, capturing the memorable moments through photos and cherishing the vibrant atmosphere.
Denise Hanson, president of Root 2 Rise, shared, “Thank you so much for inviting Root 2 Rise to the Drumline Live event and for taking such good care of us. Most of our students had never stepped foot into Overture Center, much less attended a show. We all thoroughly enjoyed the thrilling music and dance extravaganza. It spoke to our hearts and souls. We all had a wonderful time, before, during and after the performance.”
