Experience the magic of holiday traditions at Overture

November 14, 2024

As the holiday season approaches, Overture is getting ready to welcome families, friends and theater goers to a lineup of festive shows that celebrate tradition, storytelling and joy. This year’s holiday season offers performances that will warm the heart and create lasting memories. For Overture volunteers Larry Kleinsteiber and Carol McCarthy, these shows have become an irreplaceable part of their holiday season, just as they have for the countless families who return through Overture’s doors year after year to share in the magic.

Cherished Traditions and Timeless Performances

For many, attending a holiday show at Overture is a cherished annual tradition, and the variety of performances offers something different and special for everyone. From “A Madison Symphony Christmas” to “A Christmas Carol,” “Winter Fantasia: Reimagined” and “The Nutcracker,” our December shows embody the holiday spirit.

“I think families enjoy the same productions year after year, knowing these are beloved performances,” said Kleinsteiber. “Christmas wouldn’t be the same without them.”

McCarthy agreed, noting the importance of setting aside time to share these magical moments with your loved ones. “The holidays can be hectic, and purchasing tickets for a holiday show at Overture is a way of carving out some dedicated family time,” she explained. “Watching parents enjoy their children’s reactions is particularly heartwarming.”

The Nutcracker: A Favorite for Generations

Year after year, Madison Ballet’s “The Nutcracker” brings together grandparents, parents and children and serves as a special date night for couples. McCarthy has noticed that this classic ballet captivates audiences of all ages, with each generation sharing the magic of the performance.

“A scene that always makes me smile is when the youngest ballerinas come out from under the hoop skirt of Mother Ginger. The audience loves it, too!”

Carol McCarthy

Kleinsteiber agrees “The Nutcracker” holds a special appeal, especially for young children. “One of my favorite moments is seeing the little girls who come dressed as ballerinas,” he shared. “They look so cute. I imagine many of them are taking dance lessons and they’re here to watch the prima ballerinas perform. And the music performed by the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra is so beautiful!”

A Christmas Carol: A Heartfelt Transformation

Another show that holds a special place in the season is “A Christmas Carol” by Children’s Theater of Madison. This adaptation by Charlotte T. Martin offers a refreshing take on the classic story. For McCarthy, the simple elegance of the set and the personal connection of casting real-life family members as the Cratchits only add to the charm.

A Madison Symphony Christmas: Joy and Celebration

For those who delight in holiday music, A Madison Symphony Christmas is truly a treat. Kleinsteiber’s favorite moment each year is the orchestra and chorus performance of “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” with a beautiful soloist rendition of “O Holy Night” often stealing the show. McCarthy added that the concert’s beauty extends beyond the music.

“The poinsettias on stage are gorgeous and festive,” she said. “The Mt. Zion Baptist Church Choir, Madison Youth Choir and the Madison Symphony Chorus all come together for a powerful, joyful performance.

Kanopy Dance Company’s Winter Fantasia: A Magical Holiday Treat

Another beloved tradition at Overture is Kanopy Dance’s “Winter Fantasia: Reimagined,” a multicultural showcase featuring captivating stories and traditions from around the world. Highlights include “Chalo Ramiye,” a vibrant Indian folk dance by guest artist Udbhav Desai honoring the Navratri festival, and two Scandinavian tales, “Once Upon a Winter’s Eve” and “The Norse Tree of Life,” brought to life with stunning costumes by David Quinn. Adding a touch of city sparkle, “Winter in the City” closes the show with lively choreography set to Leonard Bernstein’s “On the Town,” making this holiday program a joyful blend of cultural magic and festive cheer.

The Spirit of the Season at Overture

For both volunteers, spending time at Overture during the holiday season is a gift.

“The spirit of the season abounds at Overture,” McCarthy said. “It’s wonderful to welcome people to this beautiful space and witness their enjoyment.”

Kleinsteiber agreed, adding that watching these shows – along with holiday classics like “Miracle on 34th Street” and “It’s a Wonderful Life” – have become a part of his own holiday traditions.

A new addition this year, families can also experience holiday magic at Overture with Lightwire Theater’s “A Very Electric Christmas” on Friday, Nov. 28 at 3 p.m. Dancing toy soldiers, caroling worms and performing poinsettias bring this imaginative story to life in a dazzling display of light and music. Tickets are currently 25% off with code EARLYBIRD.

As the season draws near, Overture invites you to create your own holiday memories with these beloved performances. Whether it’s your first time or an annual tradition, the experience of live music, heartwarming stories and holiday cheer awaits you and your loved ones.
