Overture Center earns KultureCity certification: A new milestone in accessibility
October 17, 2024

We are thrilled to announce that Overture Center has been officially certified as a sensory-inclusive facility by KultureCity®, a national leader in promoting accessibility for individuals with sensory needs. This exciting recognition underscores our commitment to ensuring that everyone—regardless of sensory sensitivities—can fully enjoy the transformative power of the arts.
By partnering with KultureCity, Overture Center is now the first performing arts center in Wisconsin to achieve this certification and only the third space in Madison. This designation means that Overture is more prepared than ever to accommodate guests who may be overwhelmed by lights, sounds, crowds or other sensory stimuli.
What is Sensory inclusivity?
Sensory inclusivity is a crucial element in creating truly welcoming spaces. Many individuals, including those with autism, dementia, PTSD and other conditions face challenges when engaging with environments rich in stimuli. KultureCity works to break down these barriers by providing resources, training and awareness.
Through their Sensory Inclusive™ program, KultureCity has equipped Overture's staff and volunteers with tools to ensure that guests with sensory needs have the best possible experience. Over 500 members of our team—including volunteer ushers—completed this training, gaining valuable skills in identifying and supporting individuals who may be experiencing sensory overload. As a result, our staff is now ready to provide enhanced guest support in hopes of ensuring an accessible, inclusive and enjoyable experience for all.

“Our ushers were eager to get certified because many of them have personal connections to people with sensory sensitivities—whether it’s their grandchildren, friends or loved ones. Their enthusiasm and dedication make Overture a truly welcoming space for everyone.”
Tom Klubertanz, Overture's Director of Guest Services
Why This Matters
For those with sensory challenges, going to a public venue can feel overwhelming or even impossible. Sensory overload can make it difficult to enjoy performances, art exhibits and public events. Through our collaboration with KultureCity, we hope to minimize these barriers and allow everyone to participate fully in the arts. With our new certification, Overture Center has taken a significant step toward achieving that goal.
At Overture, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the arts—and this certification reflects that mission. It’s not just about making our space more accessible, it’s about creating an environment where every guest can enjoy an extraordinary arts experience.
Along with this certification, we are excited to introduce a new “Accessibility Hub” at Overture where any patron can pick up a variety of items to improve their experience. This includes noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools, assisted listening devices and sunglasses. Additionally, guests will find quiet areas within the venue to help them relax and regroup if they become overwhelmed.
