CTM presents “Cinderella,” a magical celebration of community and representation
January 29, 2025
When the curtain rises on Children Theater of Madison’s “Cinderella: Enchanted Edition,” audiences will find themselves swept into a world of magic, music and timeless storytelling. Directed by Brian Cowing and featuring a cast of local Madison talent, this production offers a fresh take on the beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein classic while staying true to its enchanting roots.
A Prince’s Perspective
Jack Porubsky, who plays Prince Christopher, brings a unique dual perspective to this production. During the day, Porubsky can be found in Overture’s administration office working as the Broadway Engagement Program Coordinator. As a member of Overture’s programming team and performing in his spare time, Porubsky finds deep meaning in his dual roles.
“My work at Overture has given me a full-spectrum perspective of what it takes to bring a show to life,” he said. “Being part of CTM for the first time has been extraordinary, especially seeing how they blend professional development with training for students pursuing careers in musical theater.”
Porubsky’s journey to the role began with a chance connection.
“I was performing in ‘Hello Girls’ with Four Seasons Theatre when I was introduced to CTM’s Artistic Director, Brian. That introduction led to this incredible opportunity,” he said.
For Porubsky, the most rewarding part of his role is exploring the complexities of love.
“I enjoy being able to show the messiness of love—that it’s not always the most comfortable thing in the world,” he explained. “The nerves, anxiety, excitement—all these layers come together to create something beautiful! I feel so lucky to explore that complexity on stage every night.”
And of course, there’s the magic of waltzing with a princess on Capitol Theater’s historic stage.
“Nyla, playing opposite me as Cinderella, has been nothing short of a miracle worker in helping ensure my two left feet are ready for the Capitol Theater stage!” he noted.
Porubsky has loved the journey of this production and can’t wait to bring this timeless tale to life.
He explains, “Being able to perform on one of the most historical stages alongside new and old friends is truly a dream come true and nothing short of a miracle.”
                            A Dream Come True
Nyla Eltahir, alum of Madison West High School, is stepping into Cinderella’s iconic glass slippers for this full-circle moment.
“’Cinderella’ was one of the first musicals I was ever in, back in eighth grade. To return to it now as Cinderella is so special,” she shared.
Eltahir has interpreted her character by finding the playfulness, curiosity and strength of Cinderella.
"That is what allowed me to discover my own take on such a classic role,” she explained.
Eltahir’s portrayal emphasizes resilience, echoing the mantra from Disney’s 2015 “Cinderella”: “Have courage, and be kind.”
This is not Eltahir’s first time working with CTM, as you may have seen her as the understudy of Dorothy in CTM’s “The Wiz” in 2023.
“I met Brian Cowing through that production and was encouraged to audition for Cinderella,” she said.
Representation is another key aspect of Eltahir’s excitement for the role.
“It’s empowering to show young people of color that we can be royalty too. This Cinderella is filled with joy and optimism, despite the situation she is placed in.”
Eltahir’s favorite parts of the production include the big dance numbers, specifically due to the excitement of having the entire cast on stage together.
“The ball especially,” she noted. “I really feel like a princess in that moment.”
Directing with Purpose
Director Brian Cowing knew this version of “Cinderella” was a perfect fit for CTM’s 2024/25 season lineup. “The sweeping Rodgers and Hammerstein score and timeless story truly belong in the grandeur of the Capitol Theater,” Cowing exclaimed.
Inspired by the groundbreaking 1997 adaptation starring Brandy and Whitney Houston, Cowing’s vision highlights individuality and inner strength.
“Our production celebrates a Cinderella who actively shapes her destiny,” he explained. “The set, costumes and choreography create a whimsical yet fresh fairy tale world, blending classic imagery with natural elements.”
Cowing’s favorite part of the production is the community connections.
“Every actor either lives in Madison or grew up here, making this show a true celebration of local talent,” he said.
The cast’s diversity adds even more magic to the production, with a Black Cinderella inspiring young audiences.
“Representation like this is powerful, especially for kids seeing themselves reflected onstage for the first time,” said Cowing.
From the score to the breathtaking transformations, “Cinderella: Enchanted Edition” promises something magical for everyone.
“It’s about hope, resilience and the power of kindness,” said Cowing. “These universal themes resonate across generations.”
Audiences will leave the Capitol Theater reminded of the timeless magic of a dream, a little kindness and the belief that anything is possible.
Don’t miss CTM’s “Cinderella: Enchanted Edition,” a production that is as inspiring as it is enchanting.
