During the run of “Back to the Future: The Musical,” Overture Center welcomed back Maydm students for a special pre-show reception and an unforgettable night at the theater, an experience designed to spark curiosity and connection.
Maydm, a nonprofit serving girls and youth of color in grades 6-12, empowers students with the skills, experiences and connections to pursue—and transform—careers in STEM. At Overture, that mission expanded into something even bigger.
With the growing focus on STEAM, where arts and sciences intersect, “Back to the Future: The Musical” offered the perfect entry point. The production’s blend of technical wizardry and storytelling invited students to see science come to life on stage. As a Community Ticket Program spotlight partner, Maydm has joined Overture for a variety of programs over the years, each one opening new doors.
More than half of the attendees were experiencing a Broadway show at Overture for the first time. From the moment the curtain rose, students leaned in—watching closely and imagining what’s possible behind the scenes. Conversations during intermission and after the show buzzed with excitement about the special effects and the science powering the performance.
Program Manager for Artist and Community Engagement Allison Ward shared, “Getting the chance to see this show with students who have an eye for the science behind this story was eye-opening and an absolute treat—and had my own wheels spinning on how theater magic comes to be.”
Students left inspired, eager to keep exploring how creativity and technology work together, conversations that will continue in their programs and beyond.
“Thank you for giving us the opportunity to see ‘Back to the Future’! My dad and I loved it!” one participant shared.
For these students, the event provided a glimpse into future possibilities, powered by the connection between art and science—and opportunity.
