In the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder, protests have erupted across the nation and in our own community. Overture Center believes that we all have a responsibility and a role to play in addressing what has happened in Minneapolis. If we sit in silence, we are complicit in the egregious act of murder committed against George Floyd.
There is justified outrage from members of the black community and their allies. We understand their calls to action to combat this injustice.
Overture stands with the true protestors in their cries for justice and equitable treatment.
Conversely, we are saddened by the damages sustained by our State Street partners. We stand with them as well as they rebuild in what has already been a very difficult time for local business owners here in Madison.
We must be reminded that the arts play a critical role in actively bringing people together. When we share these experiences, we come to better understand each other’s journeys by listening to and learning from each other’s stories.
Black lives do matter, and Overture Center for the Arts is committed to providing a safe space where these stories can be shared. We strive to open doors, hearts and minds that will lead to understanding, action and change.
With our doors shuttered during the pandemic, we know that the healing power of arts has been curtailed. We will repair and restore Overture so that when the time comes, we will be there ready to help our community heal.
