22/23 SEASON

YOU

We reopened our doors at Overture Center this past fall after 18 months of closure, and it’s been incredible to see our community returning to our theaters. Night after night, audiences thunderously applauded during pre-show announcements welcoming everyone back, indicating how much they had missed the passion and excitement of seeing live performances during the pandemic. The shows hadn’t even started, and everyone was already excited, including yours truly! I see hundreds of shows every year, and when the pandemic hit, that was all taken away from me, leaving a void in my life. I’m sure it did for you, too. Being back in the theater with you has truly inspired me to assure the best artistry from around the world comes to Overture Center. As you browse this brochure, you’ll discover a season of diverse artistic expressions, cultures and personalities. Revel in the Madison premieres of the hit Broadway shows Hadestown and Six as well as American icon Fran Lebowitz, host of Sirius XM Broadway Christine Pedi and the rockin’ Red Hot Chilli Pipers. And find comfort with some of your favorite artists returning with new shows, including Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Straight No Chaser and the comedic genius of The Second City. It’s been too long since we danced together in Overture Hall with The Afro-Cuban All Stars and were energized with the precision of Step Afrika. This season, you’ll have the opportunity to do so again! Plus, National Geographic Live is back, and if you’re a subscriber, you can renew your same seats for another great lineup of the world’s most notable scientists, adventurers and artists. I’m also excited to introduce a brand-new series, Up Close. Following our Thursday evening Cabaret performances, we’re leaving the stage in the house and turning Capitol Theater into an intimate, Friday-night cocktail lounge while featuring some of the coolest, up-and-coming artists from around the world. Get up close with Colombian singer-songwriter Alea, singer-songwriter and cellist Gabriel Royal, and award-winning violinist and composer Layth Sidiq and laouto player Vasilis Kostas. I hope you take advantage of this unique musical experience while enjoying a drink on Capitol Theater stage. Our new season is filled with many more shows and artists chosen just for you. Subscribe now if you’d like to save money and get the best seats. I can’t wait to see you at Overture Center soon! Tim Sauers

F R I , N OV 25 , 2022 7 P M | OVE RT UR E H A L L

In a cultural landscape filled with endless pundits and talking heads, Fran Lebowitz stands out as one of our most insightful social commentators. Her essays and interviews offer her acerbic views on current events and the media – as well as pet peeves, including tourists, baggage-claim areas, after-shave lotion, adults who roller skate, children who speak French or anyone who is unduly tan. The New York Times Book Review calls Lebowitz an “important humorist in the classic tradition.” Purveyor of urban cool, Lebowitz is a cultural satirist whom many call the heir to Dorothy Parker.

A holiday mash-up for the whole family, The Hip Hop Nutcracker returns to the stage for its seventh season on tour. Directed and choreographed by Jennifer Weber, this contemporary dance spectacle is a re-mixed and re-imagined version of the classic, smashing hip hop dance and Tchaikovksy’s timeless music together into a heart-stirring and inspirational holiday event. Straight No Chaser is neither strait-laced nor straight-faced, nor vaudeville-style kitsch. Straight No Chaser is the real deal, the captivating sound of nine unadulterated human voices coming together to make extraordinary music that is moving people in a fundamental sense…and with a sense of humor. A SIMPLE SPACE SAT, MAY 6 , 2 023

Seven acrobats push their physical limits without reserve; this performance is simultaneously raw, frantic and delicate. Supported by driving live percussion and presented so intimately that you can feel the heat, hear every breath and be immersed in every moment, A Simple Space evokes real responses in audiences, something visceral rather than cerebral. Instead of fine-tuning the performance with makeup, lighting and contrived theatrical overlay, the cast has deliberately gone the opposite way. The audience is brought in close to surround the stripped backstage. In that space, the acrobats are pushed to the physical limit, breaking down their usual guards and introducing the reality of failure and weakness.

Call it “musical comedy heaven” (Rolling Stone). Call it “the most uproarious new musical in years!” (The Hollywood Reporter). Call it TOOTSIE! This laugh-out-loud love letter to the theater tells the story of Michael Dorsey, a talented but difficult actor who struggles to find work until one show-stopping act of desperation lands him the role of a lifetime. Featuring a hilarious Tony®-winning book by Robert Horn and an outrageously clever score by 2018 Tony-winner David Yazbek (The Band’s Visit, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), this New York Times Critic’s Pick is “a joyful delight” (The Washington Post) that’s “so packed with punchlines, it should be called a jokebox musical!” (Bloomberg).

Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived. From Tudor Queens to Pop Princesses, the SIX wives of Henry VIII take the mic to remix five hundred years of historical heartbreak into an exuberant celebration of 21st century girl power! This new original musical is the global sensation that everyone is losing their head over. The New York Times says SIX “TOTALLY RULES!” (Critic’s Pick) and The Washington Post hails SIX as “Exactly the kind of energizing, inspirational illumination this town aches for! The Broadway season got supercharged!” Written by Toby Marlow and Lucy Mos.
