A longtime member of Overture’s Community Advisory Council who attended “The Hip Hop Nutcracker” on Friday, Nov. 25 described the performance as “very entertaining, a good way to spend the Friday after Thanksgiving.” Our guest appreciated how the group interpreted the traditional Tchaikovsky score from “The Nutcracker” through hip-hop dance, saying:

“There were some great dance segments. It was definitely a departure from tradition—and lots of fun. The music made it really enjoyable, like a party from the very beginning, with the DJ playing old-school songs recognized by most of the audience. Legendary hip-hop artist Kurtis Blow set the tone for the show when he opened with a singalong of five familiar rap songs. The set was bare, but backgrounds changed with the scenes. The performance featured a range of R&B, hip-hop and rap, and it ended with more upbeat favorite songs from the past. The audience age range was roughly 25-55 years. It was different, entertaining and attracted a younger, more diverse demographic to Overture. It was clear that the folks in the audience knew the songs well, and they were appreciative to the point that most people sang along. Everybody enjoyed the music and loved the dancing.”
