South Carolina’s global Gullah ambassadors and the Billboard chart-toppers making “soulful honey to the ears” (NPR), Ranky Tanky released their new album “Good Time” in July 2019 via Resilience Music Alliance. After weeks of teasing new music and releasing a pair of EPs, the five-piece brings it all home on “Good Time.”
“Gullah” comes from West African language and means “a people blessed by God.” “Ranky Tanky” translates loosely as “Work It” or “Get Funky!” In this spirit, this Charleston-based quintet performs timeless music of Gullah culture born in the southeastern U.S. Sea Islands region. From playful game songs to ecstatic shouts and heartbreaking spirituals to delicate lullabies, the musical roots of Charleston are “rank” and fertile ground from which these contemporary artists are grateful to have grown.
