Disney Musicals in Schools

Creating sustainable musical theater programs in elementary schools.

It all starts with a residency…

Teaching Artist Residencies are a fantastic way to add arts programming to classroom learning. But what if schoolteachers could continue the arts programming confidently and skillfully for years after the residency is done?

Disney Musicals in Schools brings teaching artists specializing in musical theater skills to mentor teachers to be directors, musical directors, choreographers and stage managers while putting together a 30-minute Disney KIDS or 60-minute Disney JR musical.

The residency — 17 weeks for elementary and 23 weeks for middle schools  gets students and teachers singing, acting, dancing and creating together each week.

Capitol Theater debut

In the spring, students from each school join us to make their Capitol Theater debut performing one number from their musical for their peers and invited guests at the Disney Musicals in Schools Student Share or the Spotlight Middle School Showcase.

Continued support

Overture Center hosts a professional development day for teachers at participating schools. The day includes time to begin work on the current year’s musical – creating the schedule and talking about the vision for the show – and workshops to continue learning about the art of musical theater. Also, following the first-year residency, tiered support is provided for show licensing and materials for the second and third year in the program.

It starts with a dream...

Spotlight Middle School Musical Theater Program

For schools already producing musicals, the Spotlight Musical Theater program is designed to inspire, educate and connect middle school students and educators with theater professionals, providing a deeper understanding of the many aspects of musical theater.

Students involved in productions at MMSD elementary schools said the best part about being in their school production was:

“Working together and knowing everyone has faith in you and being able to trust everyone.”

“I got to sing, dance and meet new people, and I learned to sing better.”

“To be able to express myself, to perform, to be with my favorite teachers.”

Teachers said students who participated in the musical gained confidence, self-esteem and discovered they had skills they didn’t know they had.
