Overture’s Cabaret returns with Nicholas Rodriguez, All is Fair in Love…

“I’m passionate about all types of music so have included a little bit of something for everyone.”

A few years ago, award-winning Broadway, TV, film actor and recording artist Nicholas Rodriguez was asked by Overture’s Chief Artistic Experiences Officer Tim Sauers to perform at a Valentine’s Day Overture Cabaret event. Rodriguez agreed, and while it’s been a long time coming, this romantic engagement “created just for Overture” will take place on Thursday, Feb. 10.

Nicholas Rodriguez – All is Fair in Love… is the perfect way to kick off Valentine’s Day weekend.

“When Tim asked me to do this show, the only caveat was that I do a show about love and love songs,” said Rodriguez. “I was really excited about the challenge and, while I’ve done several solo shows around the country, this was an opportunity to develop something completely new.”

Rodriguez immediately started creating a set list and adding songs he’s always wanted to work on. His February 2021 show was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so Rodriguez continued to reshape his plans, putting songs in, taking songs out, trying to make all his favorites fit.

“I’m really proud of what I’ve put together,” he said. “And over the pandemic I’ve I had the chance to test it out at what I consider ‘out-of-town tryouts,’ always knowing that the real opening night will be in Madison.”

Rodriguez will take Cabaret guests through the journey of love, in all its forms―whether it’s the first date, the first kiss, a horrible breakup or being single looking for love. The intimate evening will feature new interpretations of songs from the world of pop, jazz, folk and musical theater―the music of John Denver to Stevie Wonder, Stephen Sondheim to Joni Mitchell.

Known for his roles on Broadway, Rodriguez is also a big fan of the great American songbook, singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Lena Horn and Billie Holiday. And, a native Texan, he loves country western music.

“I’m passionate about all types of music so have included a little bit of something for everyone,” he said.

Rodriguez has had an extensive career on Broadway (Tarzan), film (Sex and the City 2) and the concert stage. He recently toured the U.S. as Captain Georg von Trapp in The Sound of Music directed by Jack O’Brien, and he is currently appearing in Company on Broadway opposite Tony-winners Patti LuPone and Katrina Lenk.

“To be a part of Company and part of the Broadway resurgence, working alongside a great Broadway cast of true Broadway veterans, my heroes and role models, is truly a dream come true,” he said.

When joining Company, the show’s producer and creative team gave Rodriguez permission upfront to keep his engagement in Madison. And for that, Overture and fans are sincerely grateful!

We look forward to hearing Rodriguez’s deep voice soothe and entertain us at the Thursday, Feb. 10 event, in which the historic Capitol Theater is turned into an elegant cabaret with hors d’oeuvres in the lobby at 6:30 p.m. and gourmet dinner (view menu) on stage at 7 p.m., followed by Rodriguez at 8 p.m. Limited tickets are available at overture.org.
