DanzTrad, which stands for “traditional Mexican dance,” is a Madison dance group created with the idea of a cultural journey around Mexico—from the native Mexicas (Aztecs) to the colorful Charros with big sombreros. Audiences will discover the different traditions and music from Mexico through dance. DanzTrad intends to present, represent and promote Mexican culture, art and traditions through the performance to all generations.

The 1pm performance will be American Sign Language interpreted. Please email kidsintherotunda@overture.org at least one hour ahead to be seated within sight of the interpreter for live performances.

Meet the Artists

Carlos Ramirez-Araujo

Born in Mexico City, Carlos Ramirez-Araujo began dancing at the age of six in Mexico City. After several years, he began to specialize in Mexican dances and traditions. He took courses taught by different choreographers from different disciplines. At the age of 16, Mr. Ramirez-Araujo began to dance professionally with the "Ballet Folklorico Nacional de Mexico". At the same time, Carlos began his training in classical ballet and modern dance at the school of "Ballet Folklorico de Mexico de Amalia Hernandez" as well as the "Ballet Teatro del Espacio" directed by Gladiola Orozco and "Ballet Independiente" under the direction of Magnolia Flores. In Mexico, Carlos has worked professionally in different productions and dance companies as dancer, choreographer, costume designer, set designer and as technical assistance. In the United States, Mr. Ramirez-Araujo has had the privilege of dancing in dance companies such as Dance Wisconsin (Nutcraker Production), Call for Peace Dance & Drums Company as a dancer, Madison Children's Theater as a choreographer, and Kanopy Dance Company as a dancer and choreographer. Carlos also participated as a guest artist in other companies such as Tania Tandias Flamenco Dance company and Madison Opera. He had the honor of working with renowned choreographers and directors such as Martin Lofsnes, Director of 360 Dance Company (Martha Graham Dance Company- former principal dancer), and Amit Lahav, Director of Gecko Theater company (Physical Theater in England).
Carlos, as the director and choreographer of DanzTrad, aims to reach all of the different publics to present and promote the fusion of the culture, music, and traditions of Mexico through the dance, to create the interest of young audiences in the dance, and to preserve the roots of the folklore from Mexico.
