Get ready for laughs, romance and a dash of mischief in “For Heaven’s Sake,” starring silent comedy legend Harold Lloyd as J. Harold Manners—a carefree millionaire who loves to flaunt his fortune. But when he accidentally wrecks Brother Paul’s charity pushcart, fate takes an unexpected turn. Brother Paul uses the settlement to open the J. Harold Manners Mission—much to Manners’ dismay—until a chance meeting with Brother Paul’s charming daughter, Hope (Jobyna Ralston), changes everything. With love in the air, Manners hatches a hilarious plan to pack the mission with visitors. Lloyd’s first feature for Paramount Pictures, this 1926 gem was a box office smash in its day—and still delivers big laughs nearly a century later.

Unpacking Themes in the Film

Overture’s Duck Soup Cinema silent film series is nationally known for providing an authentic and rare silent film experience in the historic Capitol Theater, which opened in 1928. As these films were released more than a century ago, some films may depict theatric and social conventions of the time related to race, gender, socio-economic status and identity which are unacceptable. In response to and in alignment with our justice, equity, diversity and inclusion commitments, we will provide resource material to explore key themes throughout the season.

For Heaven’s Sake (1926) by Harold Lloyd uses humor to explore class, charity, and redemption while also reflecting the era’s Hollywood representation about poverty, gender, and race. We encourage you to think about how the film’s “reform through love” message reinforces class hierarchies and traditional gender roles. For context on Lloyd’s work, see the Harold Lloyd Trust. For additional resources about the film, explore this San Francisco Silent Film Festival’s essay about the film.

Banner reads: "Overture Center's Duck Soup Cinema 25/26 Season." A graphic of two film strips with black and white images from silent films is depicted on the right of the title text.
