Fly away to Never Never Land with Paramount Studios’ stunning 1924 silent film “Peter Pan,” beautifully restored from original nitrate materials, complete with authentic color tints. Betty Bronson shines as the boy who never grew up, whisking Wendy, John and Michael Darling off to a magical island for high-flying adventures and daring battles with the wicked Captain Hook (Ernest Torrence) and his band of pirates. Unpacking Themes in the Film
Overture’s Duck Soup Cinema silent film series is nationally known for providing an authentic and rare silent film experience in the historic Capitol Theater, which opened in 1928. As these films were released more than a century ago, some films may depict theatric and social conventions of the time related to race, gender, socio-economic status and identity which are unacceptable. In response to and in alignment with our justice, equity, diversity and inclusion commitments, we will provide resource material to explore key themes throughout the season.
Peter Pan (1924) reflects early 20th-century stereotypes and attitudes that shaped how Indigenous peoples were portrayed in popular culture and early film. These depictions were not created by Indigenous voices and are part of broader concern for stereotypical patterns and lack of representation that continue to influence media today.
For additional context and Indigenous perspectives, we encourage audiences to explore the following resources:
Reel Injun, directed by Cree filmmaker Neil Diamond, examines Indigenous representation in Hollywood from the silent era to today.
The Library of Congress provides historical information about early films with substantial American Indian content.
Native Appropriations, by Dr. Adrienne Keene (Cherokee Nation), offers Indigenous perspectives on representation in popular culture.
